International GIS day.
This event aligns with Esri’s International GIS initiative and events. The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. “GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.”
GIS day at the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) - South Africa.
The Directorate Spatial Information Management (SIM), within the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, is known to host an annual event called GIS Day. The idea of a GIS day started in 2008 and has grown and changed within the last few years.
The reputation built up by this annual DFFE initiative is one of a high quality, well organized, fully enriching event. The event is endorsed by Plato (GIS Professional Registration Body). Invited guests includes interested and affected persons from DFFE, GIS units from other Government Departments in South Africa, the DFFE Statutory Bodies (SANPARKS, SA Weather Services, Isimangaliso, Provincial and Local Environmental counterparts, parastatals and the GIS community in the private sector. Guests participates in carefully selected presentations related to a specific GIS theme.
