Identified Geographic Areas important for the developmet of strategic gas transmission pipeline infrastructure

The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the Development of a Phased Gas Pipeline Network in South Africa was commissioned in April 2017 by the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), National Department of Energy (DoE) and National Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), as well as iGas, Eskom and Transnet.

On 26 February 2021 Minister Barbara Dallas Creecy, published in Government Gazette 44191, Notice 143, identified geographical areas which are of strategic importance when planning gas transmission pipeline infrastructure. These areas, which are called Strategic Gas Pipeline Corridors, are identified in Notice 143. The environmental attributes associated with these corridors were determined through the specialist assessments prepared as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment for the Development of a Phased Gas Pipeline Network in South Africa, 2019.

The gazetted gas transmission pipeline infrastructure, in terms of section 24(3) of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 are:

Phase 1a & 1b: Saldanha to Ankerlig and Saldanha to Mossel Bay
