Land cover data is a crucial reference dataset that informs a wide variety of activities ranging from environmental planning and protection, development planning, economic development, compliance monitoring, enforcement and strategic decision making.

The National Land Cover 2013/2014 (NLC 2013/2014) dataset provides 72 land cover/land use classes at a 1:75 000 - 1:100 000 data application scale. With classes ranging from agriculture, forestry, vegetation, wetlands, mining and built up areas to name a few.

The data sets was acquired by the department with open user license from GeoTerraImage.

Please note: The Department of Environmental Affairs will be receiving updated versions of other National Land Cover products. If you need assistance or have questions, please feel free to e-mail your contact details to LTshikovhi@environment.gov.za

Protected areas map: 2016, Quarter 2
PACA_2016_Q1_BuffersThis  map service is showing formally protected areas in South Africa. The map is based on the official 2016, Quarter 2 data release. Privately owned nature reserves have been included on the map. Buffer areas shown on the map are based on the geographic areas defined in Listing Notice 3 of 4 December 2014 (R984).

SEA for SIPs

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has committed to contribute to the implementation of the National Development Plan and National Infrastructure Plan by undertaking Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) to identify adaptive processes that integrate the regulatory environmental requirements for Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs) while safeguarding the environment.

The SEA process is aimed at integrating environmental, economic and social factors to identify geographical areas which will have the lowest possible impact on the environment while yielding the highest possible social and economic benefit to the country.

SIP 8: Wind and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) SEA. (Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs))

SIP 10: Electricity Grid Infrastructure (EGI) SEA.

Solar Data

Solar data is now available for download. Three national data sets are available: Global Horizontal Irradiance, Photovoltaic yield (fixed) and Photovoltaic yield (tracking).

Go to the Data download section to download the data.
